It has been a busy late-Summer and Fall for me and I’d like to share a few of my latest painting projects with you.
This is a portrait commission I recently completed for the grand-parents of Emma. She is an exceptionally pretty 13 year-old girl but I also wanted to capture the angelic expression of an adolescent.
Most recently, I was commissioned by the Virginia Historical Society to do a painting of Virginia House, a Tudor-style manor located in the Windsor Farms district of Richmond, Virginia. Alexander W. Weddell, an affluent American diplomat, purchased many building materials and artifacts from the former 16th-century Priory House in Warwickshire, England. He had these transported to the United States for use in building Virginia House between 1925-29. In particular, the distinctive stone façade of Priory House was reconstituted in the construction of Virginia House. Weddell and his wife Virginia made it their home and it was deeded to the Virginia Historical Society after the couple’s passing in the late 1940’s. Virginia House, along with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, are both owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society and are open to the public. This painting will serve as the image for the official 2023 Virginia Historical Society holiday season card.
I am pleased to announce that several of my historical naval paintings depicting the Napoleonic-era struggle in the Indian Ocean, including 'The Battle of Grand Port, Mauritius' have been selected to help illustrate the book (in French) ‘Avec la Flotte des Indes sous Napoleon’ (With the Indian Ocean Fleet under Napoleon) by Admiral Pierre Bouvet de Maisonneuve. The book is based on a manuscript by the author who was the Captain of the French frigate ‘Minerve’ during the Battle of Grand Port. He took over command of the French squadron during the second half of the battle after Commodore Guy-Victor Duperre aboard the ‘Bellone’ was wounded. The Battle of Grand Port was the only multi-ship naval battle in which the French Navy defeated the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The book will be published by Editions Voilier Rouge of Vaumarcus, Switzerland in either late 2023 or early 2024.
